On 9th October 2011 Huab Lodge & BushSPA finally installed high-speed WiFi and Internet in all bungalows and public areas as a complementary service. Until then Huab Lodge & BushSPA was connected only by satellite with a maximum bandwidth of 512kbit/s with a high latency providing slow connection. It also was a bit volatile in quality and availability.
Together with Telecom Namibia, Huab Lodge & BushSPA designed and erected a repeater station on a 1.225m high mountain within the Huab Private Nature Reserve. The repeater is connected to Telecom Namibia's Otjikondo WiMax Base Station which is 65km away, providing up to 10Mbit/s of Internet Bandwidth. From the repeater station a WiFi link was established to the Lodge about 10km away.
It was a mammoth undertaking to get the repeater station set up on the mountain. As there is no road leading up, every bit of the equipment including two solar panels, two heavy car batteries, two antennas, WiFi and WiMax radios, a large cabinet as well as a 9m wooden pole and all the ladders and tools with a total weight of about 300kg had to be physically carried up there. The actual installation only took about 6 hours.
